If you are interested in becoming a professional designer, there are at least 4 essential skill sets you must have:

1. Talent

The first requisite is talent. You must have an instinctive ability to use your good judgment in managing the visual communication through colours, patterns, scale and creativity. You must use them effectively to express your fashion illustration ideas.

If you do not possess this creative ability or the potential to develop it over the course of your education, you are not cut out to be a fashion designer.

2. Technical skill

The second requirement for a successful fashion designer is technical expertise. The mastery of current tools that are necessary to produce and implement your ideas.

Be it the use of free hand fashion sketch drawing or the use of new computer softwares like (ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR) to assist your presentation of your solutions. Designing tools and choice of fabrics may be changing over time, so you may need as a professional to upgrade and learn new ideas to stay in touch with changing fashion trends. 3. People skill

The third requisite is a good set of interpersonal skills. This means being a good verbal communicator and a good listener who is able build and maintain positive relationships with others. Building rapport with clients and colleagues and establising and maintaining mutual respect with one another. These qualities (not confine to just the fashion industry) are essential in building one's own career or business. Joint partners, co-workers will be happy to work with you.

4. Business skill

The fourth requisite is business acumen. In order to advise our clients, we need to clearly understand their business challenges and competition. Identifying changing trends and marketing opportunities will be an advantage.

In the long run, a fashion designer must be able to meet client's expectations in terms of efficiency and creativity. You also need to be wise in managing your own financial operations and management issues, especially if you want to run your own business.
